To the best of my addled recollection this is only the 3rd star trail image I've made in my life. The first two were made at this very same lake in Pennsylvania many moons ago. Back then I used a Pentax K1000 loaded with Kodak T-Max 3200 and 50mm 1.4 lens, and the images sucked. This one was made with a Nikon D810 and a much better lens, but I'm not sure its entirely superior to the first two images in some ways.
What I do know is that in both instances the act of sitting beside a frozen lake listening to the sounds ice makes in the middle of the night was the actual point, and any cool images captured was just icing on the cake.
